The new German Packaging Act (VerpackG) entered into force on 01.01.2019. It obliges manufacturers and distributors who put sales packaging into circulation to take it back and recover it. An appointed third party can be used to fulfil this obligation - for the mineral oil industry, this is GVÖ.

  4. How do I get rid of my oil cans?

    The following applies to collection points:
    According to the German Packaging Act (VerpackG), packaging, e.g. oil cans, are subject to strict conditions and regulations regarding the take-back obligation. The GVÖ is the recovery company for packaging of the mineral oil industry, which relieves you of your take-back and recovery obligation as well as the obligation to produce supporting documents. The GVÖ take-back system is financed by the licence partners. For you as a collection point, the service is free of charge. Simply register online - and you will already benefit from the perfect take-back service of the GVÖ.

    The following applies to consumers:
    Return the empty containers undamaged and sealed to where they were purchased. Don’t throw oil packaging into the yellow bag or the yellow bin or into the household waste after use! This is because the remaining oil in the packaging pollutes the environment if disposed of improperly. The sales outlets of products of the GVÖ licence partners take back the empty packaging free of charge and pass them on to the GVÖ. GVÖ then ensures environmentally sound recovery in certified specialised companies. In this way, the oil packaging is added back to the recovered substance cycle.

  5. How does the system work?

    GVÖ is a community of 40 shareholders and over 200 licence partners. As a recovery company, GVÖ ensures the collection and environmentally sound recycling of used, completely emptied cans, canisters and drums throughout Germany. The GVÖ system is financed by the licence partners and is free of charge for the registered collection points.

  6. What is collected?

    GVÖ collects your used, completely emptied packaging up to a capacity of 65 litres/kilogram, regardless of their brand.

  7. How often is the collection?

    Depending on demand. If your collection points have collected at least 4 units, i.e. full GVÖ bags and/or empty garage drums, they can commission the collection.

  8. What is a collection point?

    Collection points are all companies where sales packaging of mineral oils, greases, radiator antifreeze, additives and similar oil-based products accumulate. For example: petrol stations, workshops, specialist shops and wholesale markets, mineral oil trade, commercial/industrial partners.

  9. How many collection points can I register?

  10. What happens to the collected oil containers?

    GVÖ ensures environmentally sound recovery in certified specialist companies. As granulate, the packaging is added back to the recovered substance cycle. New products can be created from them.

    According to the German Packaging Act (VerpackG), packaging, e.g. oil cans, are subject to strict requirements and regulations regarding the take-back obligation. With a GVÖ system participation, you assign these to a reliable partner and thus fully meet your legal obligations.

    Furthermore: you offer your collection points a convenient, free full service in all aspects of packaging take-back and disposal. GVÖ also takes care of the prescribed documentation on recovery jointly for all participants. The system fee covers all costs for the take-back, recovery and documentation of your oil packaging placed on the German market.

    GVÖ thus relieves you of the legal obligation to take back, recover and document. There is no simpler and more convenient way to fulfil the legal requirements for the collection and disposal of empty packaging.
