When did the Packaging Act change?

The Packaging Act changed on 01.07.2022.

What changed exactly?

Since the 1st of July 2022, all companies that bring packaged goods into circulation in Germany must register in the packaging register "LUCID". The type of packaging does not matter. Electronic marketplaces must also comply with the new law and are obliged to ensure that sellers are registered in the "LUCID" packaging register. Non-registered sellers will no longer be allowed to offer goods from 01.07.2022 onwards. Fulfilment service providers must also ensure that the ordering companies are registered. Traders who circulate service packaging such as ice cream cups, pizza boxes or envelope paper are also obliged to register.

Taking back packaging

Packaging intended to reach the consumer must be taken back by the distributor who first put it into circulation. The latter may also commission another company to do this, but may not charge any fees.

Why the change?

Producers and distributors of packaging are to assume more responsibility and participate more actively in the protection of the environment.

What are the special features of service packaging?

In the case of service packaging, such as coffee-to-go cups, there is the option of using pre-licensed packaging.
